Kardan was proud to work alongside Bilyaa to help create a new garden space for the students at Padbury Primary School.

The design was guided through Bilyaa’s collaboration with Moodjar Consultancy, ensuring the space reflects Nyoongar cultural knowledge respectfully.

The students add their own special touch by decorating the logs, planting the garden beds, and making the space their own.

Around 25% of the team on this project were Aboriginal peoples, bringing a range of stories, and experiences to the build.

This really is a beautiful space for students to learn, play, and connect with Country every day.

Recently, we celebrated three Aboriginal team apprentices who completed their trades this year. Our commitment to creating long-term careers for Aboriginal people also continues when things get tough.

We recently welcomed Ashley Manson, a proud Noonkanbah man who found himself without work. Thanks to a strong network and mob looking out for each other, he is now joining the Kardan team, ready to complete his apprenticeship and build a long-term future in construction.

Massive thanks to Stuart Cocks at Gambara a majority Indigenous-owned construction materials supplier, for helping make this happen.

Finishing an apprenticeship doesn’t happen by luck. It takes:

A proud Whadjuk-Yued Nyoongar man, father, and inspiring leader, Frank’s story is one of resilience, grit, responsibility and reciprocity.

Frank’s life experiences inspired him to pay it forward and to empower others. Through Kardan and his other ventures, Frank realised his vision.

To date, some achievements worth noting in the construction industry:

✅ $35k+ in sponsorships for Aboriginal sportspeople and Aboriginal managed football clubs

Congratulations to our very own Kardan Krew member Kainoa (Nyoongar), who, as Captain/Coach of the Willagee Bears Rugby Club, led the team to a historic victory in the Grand Final breaking a 41-year drought!

Kainoa was also selected in the 2025 Team of the Year and Jackson Bond, another integral member of Kardan, played the most games for 1st Grade and was a key contributor to the team’s incredible performance.

We’re so proud to support our Mob achieving incredible things both in sport and in life.

This Reconciliation Week, we reflect on the journey we’re all walking. A journey shaped by both truth and challenge, resilience and renewal. The theme “Bridging Now to Next” reminds us that reconciliation is about carrying forward the lessons of the past while building a stronger, more united future.

Reconciliation is at the heart of what we do here at Kardan. As an Aboriginal-led social enterprise, our purpose is to create real, lasting change through meaningful employment pathways, training, and opportunities for Aboriginal people and others underrepresented in construction.

We do this in honour of the strength of our ancestors, acknowledge the setbacks of history, and stay focused on the work still to be done. Like native plants regrowing after fire, we believe in the power of regeneration of healing, truth-telling, and growth.

Let’s walk this path together with purpose, respect, and a commitment to a fairer Australia.

2021 has been a huge year for us, while working on projects such as the Fremantle Prison Commissariat, the Boorloo Bidee Mia Refurbishment, the Kunawarritji Sports Court and the MELconnx Site Establishment, we continued to focused on upskilling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the construction industry. ⁠

Looking back to where it all started, in 24 months we have created 2 Aboriginal apprenticeships, 2 Aboriginal traineeships and 12 Aboriginal trade assistant positions through our Kardan Kadadjiny Bidi (Learning Path) program. ⁠

Further to this we have provided several Aboriginal subcontractors in excess of $2M worth of contracts since Kardan’s inauguration 2 years ago, with many of our Aboriginal subbies having since generated their own Aboriginal apprenticeship programs from Kardan business support. ⁠

Kardan has also signed multiple MOU’s with West Australian Disabled Enterprises to create jobs in the construction industry for people living with disabilities. ⁠

And that's a wrap! We are so proud to have been involved in the creation of such an incredibly important community facility, Boorloo Bidee Mia (‘Perth pathway to housing’ in Whadjuk Noongar language.)

Kardan Construction was selected by Spotless to work on the conversion of the old YHA Hostel in the Perth CBD into a much needed homeless accommodation facility.

The project comprised of a complete refurbishment of 69 accommodation rooms, communal bathrooms, offices, meeting rooms and kitchens across 4 levels. Kardan Construction was able to deliver the works in 6 weeks, allowing the facility to begin its critical operational work.

Special thanks to the whole team who worked tirelessly to complete the project on time. During its peak, we had 57 people on site!

Boorloo Bidee Mia is a collaboration between the State Government, the City of Perth, Wungening, Noongar Mia Mia, and the countless Community members, staff and service providers who will contribute to ongoing improvement of services and responses that suit the many different needs of the rough sleeping community.

How cool is this! Our demolition team working on the Fremantle Prison Commissariat project has uncovered some historic graffiti.

"ROLL ON TIME" has been scratched into the original plaster, believed to have been created by a disgruntled convict circa 1859. (Feel like I've seen something similar in our staff toilets...🤔😜)

Constructed in 1857, the Commissariat, located in the basement of the northern end of the Prison’s Main Cell Block, was originally used for the storage and distribution of food, clothing and provisions for convict working parties and convict depots around the State.

A popular location for unique functions and events, and featured on guided tours, the Commissariat has been closed to the public since 2018, when Prison conservation staff discovered extensive damage had occurred to the ceiling.
